06.12.2012, 19:50
Hi everyone

sorry for my lack of updates but i have been extremely busy both painting and outside of the miniature world. I had the pleasure of being the first person to paint up rogue trooper from dark world creations new 2000AD range. This was a monstrously quick paint job for me at just over 20 hours and i have to say it was a pleasure to paint! its not everyday you get to paint blue skin

i hope you like what i've done with this piece!!

p.s. I've got the joker from knight models and my nurgle lord to finish over the next few days and then....ive got some more very exciting things to do!!!

06.12.2012, 20:14
The blue skins looks very nice. Tried myself painting blue skin, but no way. :-( Now I can use you picure here as a reference. :-)

i've been asking myself this question about metallics lately, "what's so special about metals?" and my answer is,,,,nothing. Metals in essence should be treated the same as any other paint. Personally i really like the potential blend of nmm and tmm i don't think they should be differentiated.

So, with this in mind,,i started this...

there is still a shed load to do,,but i thought i'd share the initial musings :)

18.12.2012, 19:50
Okay, what kind of demon was painting this for you???

I mean, this is WOW!

What a show!

The metallics are bright, got variations in colour and they follow the zenithal light.

How did you manage do get it like this?

Best regards

The Sgt

18.12.2012, 21:22
The interesting thing about TMM is that its TRUE! The reflections work from any direction - especially if the area is as shiny as we can see in the WIP.

I know many painters blend metallics like anything else. Of course, when you use non-metal-colors for this, you will lose the "correct" shine to some extend.

But the whole thing looks awesome - even in its unpainted state. Terrific ;)

19.12.2012, 01:59

great result, very impressive. I love it when you are not able to distinguish on a Miniature if its Non or True Metallic.

Metals in essence should be treated the same as any other paint

You are definetly right. But except for Gold TMM, especially if you want to paint a brighter Gold. A darker Gold/Bronze or stuff like that is not that problem. But a bright Gold TMM is a true bitch in my eyes. Difficult to get a depth in the Blending, Difficult to set bright Highlights which are noticeable....a true bitch :D

Please keep us updated with this project.

19.12.2012, 15:25
cheers guys :)

i promise to post a full step by step of how to do the metals (ill show it on one of the legs!) as my next post! for now i just post some updates.

here is a bit of progress! If there is enough interest then i'll post a full step by step of how to paint the metallics :)

19.12.2012, 15:53
Hi Chris,

looking great. And it would be very nice to have the step-by-step for the MAD-allics. :-)

I think that TMM looks nicer than NMM, so I'm really looking forward to your step-by-step.

Thanks for showing

23.12.2012, 19:06
Here is a link to the article on metals that i promised. It's a full step by step with quite large pictures! i hope its of use guys and girls! The article will remain on my site permanently so it can be referred back to whenever it's needed. Please let me know what you think about the article, any changes that might make it better and any bits that you feel are missing. Also, if there are any articles that you think could be useful in the future please let me know!

and some progress pictures

23.12.2012, 19:22
Looks really impressive.
What colours do you use?

23.12.2012, 19:42
There is a full article here Toolinger with more than just the colours :)

and if you just want the colours
Base: VMA Aluminium

Shadow 1: VMC Light Sea Grey

Shadow 2: GW Fenris Grey

Shadow 3: VMC Dark Seagreen + Bestial Brown

Shadow 4: GW Chaos black

Clean up: VMA Aluminium

Highlight 1: VMC Light Flesh

Glaze 1: VMA French Blue

Highlight 2: GW Skull White

23.12.2012, 20:15
Wow! Great - thanks a lot!

Any reason that you use two GW colours?

Edit: Sorry, I just noticed you mentioned the articel in a post before...

23.12.2012, 22:32
"Any reason that you use two GW colours?"

Generally i prefer to use vallejo paints but i don't have the complete range so some of my paints are still from GW, there is no major reason for it though.

And I'm glad you like the article :) thanks for looking!

23.12.2012, 22:55
Hi Chris,

great article. Thanks for showing it n such a detail. With my next mini I will definitifly use the information for painting the metal.

25.12.2012, 14:16
Thanks Matthias! I'm glad it's of use :)

So i had a little play with the yellows last night. I still need to do some glazing and final highlights but i thought i'd share this with y'all.

Base: GW Iyanden Darksun

Shadow 1: GW Snakebite leather

Shadow 2: GW Snakebite leather + black 50:50

Clean up: GW Iyanden Darksun

Highlight 1: VMC Pale sand

Next but not done yet

Glaze 1: GW Sunburst Yellow

Glaze 2: VMC Lemon Yellow

Highlight 2: GW Skull White

Shadow 3: VMC Dark Seagreen + Black (maybe)

25.12.2012, 19:40

26.12.2012, 02:12
This is already a 10 now. You need to stop painting. NOW.

26.12.2012, 20:16
Hehe, thanks guys! and I'm not stopping until it's finished (although I am stopping for today)

So, I've been hacking away at the red for a bit of today and it's starting to get to a point where I'm quite happy with it. There is still clean up to do, but I'm getting impatient with it so now is a good time to stop!

This isn't an angle i would normally show,,but i think its a really interesting view of it...

27.12.2012, 11:16
I TOLD you to stop. You had reached the end of the scale... You had 10 points.

Now you broke the scale, reaching 14 points (1/3rd 42)... I IMPLORE YOU! Do NOT break it further! Have a heart! For humanity's sake....

You cannot finish the best Miniature of 2013 in early January.... The rest of the year is going to be a letdown :D

If you continue you might get several million points out of 10 for hoopiness... It is SIMPLY NOT DONE. :D

Your president.

28.12.2012, 20:55
NEVER!!!!! not until its finished :) and then i have more to do....like another 42 more

anyway, thanks for the kind words president!

Little update for you my friends! I re-did the chest to create more volume as it felt a little bit flat, i also boosted the highlights on the red to match the yellow a little better and the belt and pants have been painted up too! The next update should see colossus finished and then i'm thinking of doing a full SBS on how to do NMM blue/purple similar to Joe's marneus calgar :) (labour intensive but good results)

SO CLOSE!!! but so far...

28.12.2012, 21:26
You scare me Chris. :-) Looking awesome! But is the base not missing something like primer? Or is the guy currently fixed there with blue tack?

28.12.2012, 21:42
That's pure awesomeness.
What colours did you use to get the red more connected with the yellow?

28.12.2012, 21:57
Hey Chris

This is really a kick ass paintjob. The metal parts are looking very realistic. And the yellow and red areas of his " latex " suit fits perfectly together.
Very nice.

29.12.2012, 15:11
@DerSkuggan: the giant hand and colossus are pinned with bluets so it all comes apart still :)

@Toolinger: I needed something that was more desaturated or closer to neutral to wash out the highlights because they were far too saturated. The yellow highlights are not that saturated so it made the model look odd when the red highlights were very saturated. I used Space wolf grey, vomit brown and white to create the highlight for the red.

@Darkknight: Thanks :D

29.12.2012, 18:50
Thanks for the explanation!

01.01.2013, 15:27
WOW - the word "awesome" just got competition.
"MonkeyMan" is about 7x more awesome :D

10.01.2013, 09:45
wow, absolut great stuff. love to see more of it :)

15.01.2013, 12:14
updates soon :)

im just working on another article for people to check out but i got slowed down due to portfolio hand-ins and essay hand-ins at uni!!

15.01.2013, 16:33
FINALLY,,,ive been able to pick my brushes back up. I had portfolio and essay hand-ins up until yesterday so its been crazy busy. Anyway, here is where i'm at. I've just started on the hand and as promised, there will be a full SbS on how to do NMM blue/purple ala brokenblade.

15.01.2013, 20:41
Oh, boy! What are you doing? Looks... already. Cannot find the correct words for it. I'll pick up a hammer and smash my minis... :-)

Very happy that you share this model and thanks fo the sbs which you already posted and will be posting.

15.01.2013, 20:41
Double post!

15.01.2013, 21:04
Oooooh man this is so fucking AWEEEEESOMMMMMME

I really love it!!! Bring it to the gamesday painters dinner this year i want to see it real :D

16.01.2013, 16:32
i don't think it's possible for me to do a sbs for this,,,it's difficult enough to try and make it right myself let alone disrupt the process to take pictures and try and explain how, "just do it till it looks right" works... ohwell :(
sorry :( :( :(

16.01.2013, 18:33
Oh meeeen the reflection looks really great i looooove it! Can't wait to see the finished model!

16.01.2013, 19:44
last update,,,,until finished completely

16.01.2013, 20:26
Wow! The hand will go blue?

I didn´t expect that colour, but it does fit in the colour sheme!

And even the reflections are gorgeous!

Great work! Go ahead!

hey friends!!

i know it has been some time since i updated here but university has kept me very busy. I am still working hard on colossus but also on something else which is much more fun for me right now....MAULG!!

and just to prove colossus is still receiving some love...

i hope you like!

29.01.2013, 17:18

my eyes getting bigger and bigger

29.01.2013, 18:16
Lovely work on both of them my friend! Take your time, they deserve it and we will wait like little ... uhm, people who are waiting for something cool!

Only the green tape at the Colossus photo distracts, it hurts the eye. Can't wait to see the figure without the green.
I guess the color scheme will feel even greater without it!

29.01.2013, 19:43
I really like the mirror effect of the robot hand. And the rest is really nice. The maulg looks promising. The stones on the base look a bit too round and not textured enough, but I wait for what your magical brush will do with it.

29.01.2013, 21:47
Lookin' good, especially Colossus. The Hand gets more stunning, every time you post pictures. Maulg makes me want to paint another one of this little fellow..... but I have to agree with Klaus/Begbie. The Stones look extremely roundish, but that just raises the excitement concerning the final outcome

30.06.2013, 02:42
Hey all :)

thought it was about time i posted the final pics of this. I know its taken for ever to post the final pics but life has really been a bitch lol. I hope you like the final thing.

Hi Chris,

if you are not planning to add a head to the tyranidbody you should do some work on ist neckstump. Atm it looks to round and out of the box.

Keep painting.

Hi all,

I'm currently selling my Colossus model from knight models to help pay for my uni course! It's a chance to own an expertly painted and highly detailed model. I have won multiple painting awards including golds @ gamesday spain and germany, euromilitaire and salute!

back again! :)

just wanted to throw a piece up here that i'm working on to get a little feedback. Im trying to push myself and make a slight imitation of one of Banshee's pieces. Every so often i find it's useful to look at someone who is miles better than me and attempt to replicate, in some manner, the effect they achieved. So for the moment I'm studying how materials can be depicted through painted reflectivity.
Ive put in a few hours each day so far. The colours i'm using as well as more wip can be found one my website: www.monkeyman7x.com

I hope you like!!

Those leather-parts look awesome. I like the difference between leather and cloth. You did a great job dividing those two fabrics.
P.S. I really like the rhino. You did an awesome job with the choice of colors. But as I mentioned on CMON. The warm shadows in his chest area don't seem to fit the overall image. Though ... I don't know how you'll paint the rest of the more brownish skin.

Hey all!

The captain america/space marine piece is still progressing, but i had a little distraction last weekend in the form of a workshop with Alfonso Giraldes and it was AMAZING.
